Lady Maria, the Coptic

She is an Egyptian believer, whose name was connected to Lady Hajar, prophet Ibrahim’s wife. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was married to her, and she brought him a baby boy. Then, she came to Saudi Arabia and lived in Yathrib (now Medina). The prophet (PBUH) told us that he has kinship ties with the Egyptians, asking his companions to be kind to them saying, “You would soon conquer Egypt and that is a land which is known (as the land of al-qirat). So when you conquer it, treat its inhabitants well. For there lies upon you the responsibility, because of blood-tie or relationship of marriage (with them). (Sahih Muslim)” Her name is Maria bin Sham’on. Al-Muqawqis has gave her as a gift to the prophet (PBUH), together with her sister, Siren and a slave called Ma’bour; in addition to thousands of gold, twenty soft Egyptian clothes, a mule called Doldol, some honey, musk and bukhoor. Hamed bin-Abu Balt’a took such gifts to the prophet (PBUH). He talked to Marina about Islam, and she soon became a Muslim. Maria was born in a village called Hufn, on the east bank of the River Nile in Upper Egypt, where she spent her childhood. When she grown up, Maria moved with his sister, Siren, to Al-Muqawqis palace in Alexandria. When the gifts reached the prophet (PBUH), he honored Maria (RA) and her sister, where they stayed at Om-Sulaim al-Ghumaysa’ bin Milhan. He married Siren off to his poet, Hassan bin Thabet. He loved her dearly, and she lived at a house near Lady Aisha at Haritha bin al-No’man. The prophet (PBUH) used to spend the whole day at Maria’s house. Lady Aisha felt jealous and was very sad. Then, the prophet (PBUH) took Lady Maria to another home at the suburbs of Medina. A year later, they got a baby boy (Ibrahim) in Dul-Hija, the eighth year after Hijra. It is said that the prophet (PBUH) has released Maria, and married her. The prophet (PBUH) was very happy with his son. He named him Ibrahim, and make sadaka as much silver as the boy’s weight; in addition, he has sacrificed with a mail sheep. Ibrahim became very sick, and died soon in the eleventh year after Hijra. He was 17 months old. The prophet (PBUH) cried for him very much and said, “My eyes shed tears and my heart is full of grief, but we cannot say except what makes Allah (SWT) pleased with us. Allah (SWT) knows that I will miss you, Ibrahim.” It was narrated that Lady Maria and Siren was crying for the death of Ibrahim. The prophet (PBUH) died one year after the death of his son, and Lady Maria died soon after the prophet (PBUH) in the sixteenth year after Hijra. Omar (RA) prayed for her, and she was buried in al-Baqee’ beside the mothers of believers. After spreading Islam in Egypt in the twentieth year after Hijra, the companion, Ebada bin As-Samet, searched for the village where Lady Maria was born, and built a mosque there. It is now called, Sheikh Ebada’s Village.
